Abstract

Crowd Science is a new paradigm for collaboration that has the goal of enabling, through open participation of a great number of non-scientists citizens, scientific researches that depends on human workforce and that would not be feasible considering economic or time constraints. Considering the growing academic interest in this area, this work has researched how some data quality tools can help in the effectiveness of crowd science initiatives, making the results more reliable and assertive, and how gamification tools can help in the efficiency of those projects, increasing the retention of volunteers and the amount of contributions made by each of them. After discussing these two subjects, which includes a research of the gamification and data quality tools available and how to apply them in the crowd science field, this work demonstrates how the selection and development of the new tools was done in the Fast Science platform, and how an A/B test was performed which indicated that the gamification used has increased by 4 times the number of contributions without harming the data quality.
