Abstract
We present a proposal that articulates the history of matrices to linear algebra teaching. The theoretical and methodological frameworks are inspired by the model introduced by Tinne Hoff Kjeldsen, to integrate history with the teaching of mathematics, as well as in Anna Sfard's theory of  Thinking as Commmunication. Based on two teaching experiments conducted with undergraduate students in mathematics, we investigate at first, how historical sources can promote reflections on metadiscursive rules related to matrices and determinants, from commognitive conflicts. We also analyze the impact of these reflections in students' conceptions, related to these concepts. Furthermore, we investigated how the study could contribute to the development of a historical consciousness, with the aim of enabling the formation of a denaturalized vision of matrices and determinants. Among the findings, we have found that students made explicit some of their metarules; the reflections on metarules influenced changes in some of their conceptions, and lastely the study contributed to the development of a historical consciousness together with the formation of a denaturalized vision of matrices and determinants.
